Bucherer

Time keeping is tightly linked to scientific revolutions and the functioning of our universe, where mechanics meet fascination. Manifested through the design of micro cosmos and celestial elements in the interiors, JTS created a retail space of mechanical wonder that will bring the luxury retail experience of Bucherer into the future.

design concept

When thinking about time, thoughts are led to our universe and how we move through life. Sir Isaac Newton first drew the connection between the mechanics of the universe and the mechanics of a watch, when saying “that the physical laws uncovered revealed the mechanical perfection of the workings of the universe to be akin to a watch, wherein the watchmaker is God.”

With this link to the harmony of the universe, Johannes Torpe Studios designed the flagship store concept around circular shapes and mechanics, bringing the inside of the watch out into the cosmos. The watch itself becomes a representation of the movement of astronomical bodies in the universe, and so movement becomes the foundation of time. It is designed into the very core of the retail concept for Bucherer, that the universe, time and thus watches are inevitably interlinked, and so importance was placed on bringing forward elements of mechanical perfection in the design itself.

Design Details

Drawing inspiration from rounded watches, the main space is a circular room housing the modular watch-display. Dressed in stone from Switzerland, the display walls pay tribute to the home of Bucherer. The modular display solution offers the necessary flexibility for Bucherer’s partner brands, and ensures coherence amidst the difference in brands. Continuing to bring in natural high-quality materials, the centre of the space is made from dark wooden tiles. If one looks closely, the growth rings of the wood become visible, as a reminder of nature’s time keeping.

The bespoke displays designed for Bucherer draw inspiration from the precision of watch-making, and use automatic movement, rotations and robotic features in creating true Cabinets of Curiosities.
